Abstract

Finite element analysis for spine applications has been aiding the biomechanical engineers, Spine Surgeons and Prostheses designers. And also many researchers have been using it to understand the spine behaviour during the healthy condition as well as when affected by diseases and subsequent deformities so as to give a better understanding for surgical interventions and prosthesis design. The current work makes an effort to review the recent developments that has been happening in studying the diseased spine using finite element simulations.  An overview is done to  compare the methods and models adopted by various authors to simulate various diseased conditions  This helps us to formulate the disease patterns, their role in destruction of the spine components and the subsequent stabilization patterns. The review found that various degeneration modeled by changing the constitutive properties of various spine components would be greatly helpful in the future as one of diagonostic tools and can aid in the long term treatment procedures.
